PSVR 2: Release, Resolution, Controller & Everything You Need To Know About In 2022
When Is PSVR 2 Coming? Will There Be A New Tracking System And New VR Controllers? We Have All The Answers.
When the PlayStation VR 2 will be released? What does it need to do better than the current PSVR? What resolution, tracking & controller does the PSVR 2 has?
The Playstation VR is a very successful pair of VR headset: Sony has sold more than five million devices and even if that seems rather low in terms of the sales figures for Playstation 4 devices (over 102 million), the headset is no flop.
This is partly due to the very good comfort of the PSVR, which is as good and long-lasting as no other VR glasses.
Although the resolution is comparatively low at 1,920 x 1,080, the sub-pixel count (three per pixel, about the same as the Oculus Rift S) makes for a surprisingly clear image – depending on the software used, of course.

Another big plus is the VR games, some of which were exclusive to the PlayStation VR. You can creep your way through Resident Evil 7 in VR, explore Skyrim, play Doom VFR, or experience awesome games like Moss, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, and Blood & Truth.
But: The tracking system with the Playstation camera is a nightmare, the move controllers are unreasonable and the cable is far too stiff.
That’s why new Sony VR glasses are needed. It has also been announced and in this article, we will tell you everything there is to know about the Playstation VR 2.
What Does PSVR 2 Need To Do Better Than The Current Model?
The most important points for new VR glasses from Sony are:
- Better tracking
- New VR controllers
- More flexible cable or even completely wireless
- Better displays
There are some distinct differences to PSVR that we hope Playstation VR 2 will bring. This includes a tracking system that is at least as robust as the inside-out system of the Oculus Rift S or Meta Quest 2.
Inside-out tracking would also mean that the far too stiff cable would finally be history. Even when sitting, the cord is extremely annoying. Alternatively, we would like a similarly simple and flexible solution as with Oculus/Meta Link.
We also need sensible controllers. While the use of the PS4 DualShock controllers in games like Moss or Astro Bot has already been excellently implemented, we can completely forget about the Move controllers.
We, therefore, wish for the PSVR 2 VR controllers similar to the Oculus Touch or even such sophisticated control devices as the Index controllers of the Valve Index.
What Resolution And Field Of View Will The Playstation VR 2 Have?
- The PSVR 2 will have two 4k HDR OLED displays
- The resolution is 2,000 × 2,040 pixels per eye
- The field of view will be 110 degrees
Currently, we only experience Playstation VR in Full HD. Due to the already mentioned distribution of the subpixels, the image is usually quite clear, but of course, we would still like to see an improvement in the display technology and thus also in the resolution.
The Varjo Aero has the best current display with 2,880 × 2,720 pixels per eye, but it is also the most expensive current VR headset for home use.
Sony’s new headset is below that, but still in the upper range of current VR glasses. The 4K HDR OLED displays of the Playstation VR 2 have a resolution of 2,000 x 2,040 pixels per eye.
The Playstation 5 already supports virtual reality from the basic structure, such as the chip architecture. So no additional hardware will be needed between the PSVR 2 and Playstation 5.
Note: The use of the PSVR with the PS5, however, still requires the additional hardware of the PSVR, including the processor box and cable clutter. A camera adapter is also required.
During a presentation at CES 2022, Sony announced the specifications of the PSVR 2:
- 4K HDR OLED displays with a resolution of 2,000 × 2,040 pixels per eye .
- Fresnel lenses (unconfirmed, info from leak) with a field of view of 110 degrees .
- Eye tracking and foveated rendering for additional VR performance and social interaction.
- Haptic feedback in the goggle housing that improves immersion and reduces the risk of motion sickness.
- Capacitive sensors in the new Sense controllers. The sensors that can detect how far apart the fingers are used only thumb, index finger and middle finger. The Sense controllers will be included with the PSVR 2.
Will PSVR 2 Come With Eye Tracking And Face Tracking?
- Eye-Tracking: YES
- Foveated Rendering: YES
- Face Tracking: No
Sony researchers consider eye-tracking and the associated “foveated rendering” (maximum graphic details are only calculated at the point at which the user is looking) to be particularly important for the future of virtual reality.
Of course, the Playstation 5 console would benefit enormously, as processing and graphics power could be used on a significantly smaller portion of the display, saving power while improving the image.
So far, eye tracking has been implemented, for example, in the HTC Vive Pro Eye (even including foveated rendering) and in the Varjo Aero.
The PSVR 2 now also comes with eye-tracking and could therefore use foveated rendering. Only the focus image would always be rendered at full resolution, while the peripheral image is rendered at reduced performance.
An infrared camera is responsible for tracking each eye. The lens distance of the Playstation VR 2 to adjust the interpupillary distance (IPD) will be adjustable.
Will There Be An Inside-out Tracking System For PSVR 2?
- Yes, the Playstation VR 2 relies on optical inside-out tracking, similar to the Meta Quest (2).
- However, the PSVR 2 will not be self-sufficient.
Tracking is the biggest brake on PSVR. Fortunately, that’s history with PSVR 2: There are Four cameras in the VR glasses for spatial tracking and tracking the Sense controllers.
Wireless PSVR 2: Will PlayStation VR 2 Be Wireless?
- No, the PSVR 2 will have a single cable to the Playstation 5.
- This is a USB-C cable, similar to Meta Link.
For Sony researcher Mallinson, the comfort of VR glasses is a crucial factor. The PSVR is far ahead when it comes to wearing comfort, there are hardly any VR glasses that are more comfortable to wear.
Nevertheless, user comfort can be improved even further, for example by eliminating the stiff cable and the cumbersome connections.
The PSVR 2 connects to the Playstation 5 with a single, more flexible cable than the current system. It is still open whether this is a custom-made product similar to the official Meta Link cable. A wireless variant is not off the table yet but is highly unlikely.
Will There Be New PSVR Controllers?
- Sony announced new VR controllers for the PSVR 2, they are called Sense controllers.
- The Sense controllers feature DualSense technology and are significantly more ergonomic than the PS Move sticks.
Let’s be honest: VR enthusiasts only touch the Move controllers, which are more than 10 years old, if they absolutely have to. They are tracked too unreliably, the operation is too cumbersome and not very intuitive. It definitely needs new VR controllers.
Luckily, Sony relented and announced new VR controllers for the PSVR 2. They are reminiscent of the touch controllers of the Oculus Quest 2, but the tracking ring goes around the VR user’s wrist.
You reach into a suggested sphere, so to speak, and grasp the controller handle there.
The tracking rings use infrared technology, so the flare tracking of the first PSVR generation is over. The new system should allow tracking that is as accurate as Oculus Touch.
Similar to touch or the controllers of the Valve Index, the thumb, index, and middle finger positions are recorded via capacitive sensors without the need to press any buttons.
In this way, gestures can be implemented with virtual fingers, such as operating switches with an outstretched index finger.
The PS5 controllers’ DualSense technology will also be integrated into the VR controllers. The excellent haptic feedback, such as the resistance when pulling a trigger, will make a clear qualitative difference to the competition.
The controllers come with the following buttons and sticks:
Left PSVR Controller: Playstation button, Create button, Action buttons (Triangle/Square), L1 button, L2 button, Left analogue stick/L3 button
Right PSVR Controller: Playstation Button, Options Button, Action Buttons (Circle/Cross), R1 Button, R2 Button, Right Analog Stick/R3 Button
What Audio Solutions Can We Expect?
- Integrated Microphone
- 3.5mm jack for headphones
The PSVR 2’s biggest disappointment so far is the lack of an integrated sound solution. We will have to connect headphones.
The latter usually has too much spatial distance to what is happening in VR, the former increases set-up times and reduces comfort.
Our hope is that there may be a variety of accessory head straps for the Playstation VR 2 (somewhat similar to the Elite strap for Meta Quest 2), offering an integrated or over-ear solution.

PSVR 2 Release: When Is The Playstation VR 2 Coming?
- The Playstation VR 2 will be released in 2022.
- A report puts the release period at Christmas 2022.
- According to a leak, Sony wants to talk about the release date in early 2022.
Updated 4th February 2022: Rumour: PSVR 2 Will Be Out In October
The new Playstation boss Jim Ryan said in June that Sony assumes that virtual reality could become a meaningful part of the future of interactive entertainment.
However, in an interview in October, he made it clear that this will not be the case in the foreseeable future:
Just a few months later, in February 2021, Jim Ryan announced in an interview that the first dev kits for the new PlayStation VR glasses would be sent out “soon”.
Shortly after the interview was published, the official announcement appeared on the PlayStation Blog – with no pictures, no video, just a short text. As for the release date, it is said that the PSVR 2 will no longer appear in 2021.
We expect a release in the third quarter of 2022. However, a Bloomberg report is postponing the release to the fourth quarter of 2022 to take advantage of the Christmas business.
A recent leak claims that Sony will talk about the release date in early 2022.
We talked extensively about the announcement and PSVR 2 on VR Marvelites.
What VR Games Are Coming To Playstation VR 2?
- The first officially announced VR game is Horizon Call of the Mountain.
- Rumors suggest that studios such as Naughty Dog (The Last of Us) are working on next-gen VR games for Playstation 5.
- According to a report, Sony wants to focus more on AAA titles for PSVR 2.
- Some PSVR games are to be remastered for Playstation VR 2.
Horizon Call of the Mountain was announced as part of the announcement of the technical details of the new Sony VR glasses.
It is a VR spin-off of the hit action-adventure Horizon Zero Dawn. Incidentally, the successor, Horizon Forbidden West, will be released shortly for PS5.
However, in Horizon Call of the Mountain, we don’t play Aloy, the main character of the game. However, we are supposed to meet her in the VR game, as well as other well-known characters.
Unfortunately, the announcement trailer is absolutely meaningless and only shows a short scene from the upcoming VR game at the end. Nothing solid is known at all. Release and playing time are also still unknown.
Blood & Truth developer London Studio is apparently working on a Next-Generation VR blockbuster. Naughty Dog is also said to be working on a VR game – at least that’s what the rumour claims.
Also, a good sign is that Sony’s Astro Bot team has been turned into an independent studio. Moss 2 will certainly appear for PSVR 2 as well.
And maybe a studio will finally dare to build role-playing boards like Pillars of Eternity, Dragon Age or Divinity: Original Sin for VR? I also believe that FIFA in VR would be a revelation.
Where Can I Find A Playstation VR 2 Review?
- We will publish a detailed PSVR 2 review in 2022 in time for the release.
- There are currently no PSVR 2 reviews.
How Much Does The PSVR 2 Cost?
- We assume a starting price for the PlayStation VR 2 of 350 to 400 dollars.
The PlayStation VR 2 is not yet available for purchase and will be more than a year away from release.
In terms of price, we expect them to be in regions similar to the PSVR at the market launch. It cost around 400 dollars in 2016.
Maybe there will be a wireless version, so without a cable connection to the console. This version would certainly be significantly more expensive. In any case, additional headphones are due.
After all, the current PSVR is compatible with the upcoming PlayStation 5.
