What Is CROSS BUY?
Cross-buy is the term applied to a game that, when you buy it, gives you the right to enjoy it on another platform at no extra cost.
Well, in this post we are going to cover which games on the Oculus Store are cross-buy and how to recognize a cross-buy VR game
Why Is It Important To Know This?
Because if you buy a VR game that is cross-buy then you can use that game both in the PC VR version and in the Quest’s standalone version for no additional cost.
So that means if you buy the VR version on Steam or on the Oculus Rift store then you can play that game’s version on your Quest too for FREE
What Happens When A Video Game Is Not Cross-buyable?
That eliminates the possibility of playing the PCVR version and in the standalone version for the same price. That is, you need to buy the separate game for the specific platform
Let’s explain it with a simple example because these terms can be somewhat complicated for people who are just starting out in the world of virtual reality.
We bought the Beat Saber game a while back to play on the Rift S. And a year later we got the Quest 2, only to discover that Beat Saber is not cross-buyable.
Therefore, if we want to play Beat Saber on our new headset, we must purchase the game, again, for Quest through the Oculus Store.
In this way, we have paid for the same game twice.
How To Know Which Video Games Are Cross-buy
- Go to Oculus.com and click on “Apps and Games”.
- Find the game you want, using the search icon located at the top right.
- Once inside the description of the game, look at the right part. There you can check with which headset the game, in particular, is compatible.
BOXVR is cross-buying. For $30, you can play in the standalone version and in PCVR mode. As you can see in the image it is compatible with Rift, Rift S, and Quest.
Beat Saber is NOT cross-buying. Therefore, when you buy it for Rift or Rift S for $29.99, you do not count on the possibility of being able to use it with Quest’s standalone mode.
